Getting the EP out last week ahead of the album’s release next month felt liberating, even though it’s anybody’s guess what a “proper” release is supposed to look or feel like these days. Are we still bound to the regular calendar practices of Friday releases? Are we, instead, invited to engage in surprise guerrilla marketing tactics? Can I also hire a blimp like Aphex Twin or hide cryptic clues around the world like Boards of Canada? Who knows…
What I do know is that I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the time to sit down and record on an almost-uninterrupted stretch of 5 weeks, with few other distractions except for walking the dog, cooking, cleaning, and taking day trips with my family. All things considered, it was a good summer, and I am immeasurably lucky to even look back at it and say that.
Making music has always been a constant in my life, and the joy that it gives me is a reward in and of itself. Sharing it with you is, frankly, the icing of a cake for which I am endlessly thankful. But as we prepare to get our kids back to school, I can’t help but think that if I am having cake, others should have it too, and they can’t. We live in a Province where going back to class sounds like it’s going to be ok, and we stepped up in keeping the infection rate as low as it can be. We are doing our part, we wear masks, avoid crowded spaces, and make sure that these little sacrifices can go a long way in keeping kids (and the eldely community at large) safe. But what about schools just south of the border? Shouldn’t they have the same chances at a safe return to class?
For the entirety of the month of September, I will be donating all sales from both the EP and album preorders to www.donorschoose.org and hopefully help out teachers and students in need of supplies and classroom material. Small contributions can make a huge difference in the lives of children in need, and I hope you’ll join me in this. You can find the bandcamp link here.
